The Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Regulations require that all vehicles imported into Canada comply, at the time of importation, with the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards in effect on the date the vehicle was manufactured. Vehicles manufactured for sale in countries other than Canada and the United States do not comply with the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Act, CANNOT be altered to comply and CANNOT be imported into Canada. The only exceptions to this rule are vehicles fifteen (15) years old or older as determined by the month and year in which the vehicle was manufactured and buses manufactured before January 1, 1971.

Vehicles acquired in foreign countries other than the U.S. and designed, built, tested and certified to meet either all applicable Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standards or all applicable United States Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards and bearing a statement of compliance label affixed by the original manufacturer, as required by the Regulations, may be eligible for importation into Canada provided the vehicle has not been altered and the certification from the original manufacturer is maintained, which may be subject to verification at the time of importation. A vehicle imported under these conditions will be subject to the Registrar of Imported Vehicles program which may be accessed at the following web site: http://www.riv.ca. For Vehicles over fifteen (15) years old, they must comply with requirements of Canadian law with regards to safety and emissions. Before shipping your vehicle it will require steam cleaning and valet of the inside and must have a minimal amount of fuel in the tank.

There are several steps to privately importing a motor vehicle in the Australia

You will be required to:-
– obtain a “VEHICLE IMPORT APPROVAL” from the Vehicle Safety Standards Branch of the Department of Transport and Regional Services. Phone: 1800 815 272 (Australia only) or (02) 6274 7506, Fax: (02) 6274 6013, email: Vimports@dotars.gov.au;
– Pay Customs duty, GST and Luxury Car Tax (LCT) where applicable and obtain a customs clearance at the port of entry,

If you plan to drive the vehicle on Australia’s roads it is essential that you contact the Vehicle Safety Standards Branch before importing the vehicle to ensure that the vehicle can meet the safety requirements and to obtain a permission to import the vehicle.

All privately imported vehicles are subject to the same rates of Customs duty and Goods and Services Tax (GST) and, where applicable, Luxury Car Tax (LCT) as commercially imported vehicles. The Customs duty is based on the Customs value of the vehicle.
The rate of Customs duty payable is that which applies to the particular type of vehicle on the date it is entered for Customs purposes in Australia. GST and, where applicable, LCT applies at the date you import the vehicle into Australia. Without a permission to import, which can be obtained from the Vehicle Safety Standards Branch, a special duty of $12,000 may apply.

As Customs duty varies according to vehicle design and value, and is subject to change, you should contact a Customs office before importing any vehicle into Australia.

Prior to making a decision to import your vehicle you should take into account the costs involved in the process such as: freight, Customs duties and entry processing charges, steam cleaning for quarantine purposes, other wharf and transport charges and any costs involved in having the vehicle meet state or territory registration requirements (whether your vehicle will indeed meet these requirements should be checked prior to importation).

Vehicles which arrive and do not have a permit and/or do not comply with the regulations, will be re-exported at the owner’s own cost.

The Quarantine department will check the vehicle, including the spare tyre and bonnet seal, and especially underneath and near the wheel arches and mudguards, to ensure that there is no dirt or mud. If steam cleaned thoroughly, it will be released, however if dirty, it will be ordered to be stream cleaned again, so it’s best you do it professionally before departure. The interior must also be fully valeted and clear of all personal effects, with a minimal amount of fuel in the tank, before shipping.

Factors to note prior to exporting your car

1. A person when transferring a vehicle to The Republic of Cyprus must have owned the vehicle for 6 months prior to shipment date. The vehicle must have travelled a minimum of 6000miles This does not apply if retiring…. only if Transferring Residency (i.e. to work)
2. Each Person may transfer only one car duty free. The person making the transfer must hold a valid driving Licence and their name must be displayed on the Registration document as the owner (More vehicles can be imported subject to duty)
3. The vehicle must have been acquired under the general conditions of taxation applicable in the Member State from which it is transferred and must not have qualified for any relief from or refund of any VAT (receipt of purchase of the vehicle may be requested)
4. If vehicle is under 6 months old and/or has travelled less than 6000 miles VAT will be charged in Cyprus as if the vehicle is brand new. This will be applicable even if VAT has been paid in the UK
5. If the person importing the vehicle intends to work and apply for Relief of Excise Duties under the Transfer of Residence route the vehicle must be shipped within twelve months of the person arriving in Cyprus.
6. If the person is retiring to Cyprus they can import the vehicle at any time as long as Application for Exemptions are made prior to the vehicle being shipped (although they could import the vehicle at the same time as their possessions and then would be required to apply within 6 months)
7. Vehicle Insurance can be arranged in UK on your existing policy on a temporary basis by arrangement with your Insurance Company but possibly the best way would be to arrange a cover note locally upon your arrival in Cyprus

• They will commence clearance in advance prior to arrival of container
• Upon arrival of container in Limassol you will visit Customs accompanied by our agent to complete the clearance formalities taking with you your Passport, Vehicle Registration Document, Driving Licence and Insurance Certificate
• If you have complied with all of the above requirements your vehicle will be cleared and handed over to you by our agent
• Prior to leaving Customs you will be given C104, which gives you temporary import status valid for one month This can be extended by revisiting the Customs office taking with you The Registration Document, Passport and Yellow copy of C104. Fine incurred if not updated
• Yellow form C104 can be extended for up to 6 months in total, by which time you must make an application for exemptions of duties This can be done be either by Transfer of Residency or by Retired Car application
• Once permission has been received for the exemption of duties you will then be required to finalise customs clearance before you can register the vehicle and obtain your Road Tax

Burke Bros Answer:
As horses are not an endangered species, customs say there should not be a problem. Our best advice would be to just simply list the item as a rocking horse, without mentioning the horse hair element on the inventory.

Burke Bros Answer:
Quarantine is not interested unless the rocks are encrusted with soil, but Customs would be if you were importing in sufficient quantity that a commercial jewellery operation might be undertaken. If it is a bona fide collection of various types of amethyst collected because you are a collector of semi precious rock, then they wouldn’t be interested. So it is really the commercial potential or intention to pursue a commercial potential that would interest Customs.

Burke Bros Answer:
The Nunchaku’s are a restricted import and we are fairly sure the Sai are also. The Bo should be ok as this is actually just a staff without any kind of cutting edge. You will probably have to apply for a permit to import these items which may or may not be granted. You can always go to the customs website and check out the prohibited weapons. This shows the Nunchaku but not the other two. It describes the Sai in terms that make us think it will be restricted also.

Burke Bros Answer:
The dried flowers are fine as long as they are clean. As for the untreated wicker and other items, they could cause a red flag for inspection. Anything like that with a shellac on it is fine, but if it is untreated they may want to inspect it for bore/insect holes. These inspections will cause delays and additional charges.
